![]() Community Gardening Project The Broad Acres Project It was proposed that the grounds of the Lacelles Court retirement complex be re-gardened in such a way as to create a landscape that was both easy to maintain and attractive for the majority of the residents. It was indicated that the residents would like a landscape that would allow individuals to be actively involved with the gardens if they so wished but that their involvement would not detract from the attractiveness of the garden and landscaping scheme as a whole. To achieve this goal it was decided after consultation to create a landscape that was planted with a long-term low-maintenance planting into which small ‘pockets’ of seasonal planting could be introduced and maintained by the residents. The pockets included individual mobile planters placed outside ground floor flats and pockets located in the side borders and rear courtyard area. The scheme also involved the creation of raised beds in the rear court yard area, additional greenhouse space and additional planters to the front of the premises. The backbone of the scheme was a replanting plan for all the major beds based around low maintenance high impact plants. Although accurately priced the project was designed and delivered in such away as to take the wishes of residents and stakeholders into account as the project unfolded and as such some flexibility between budgets was desirable.
