![]() Community Gardening Project Granville Road, Middlesbrough
“There are 112 properties on Granville Road, 97 of which belong to Endeavour Housing Association. Historically this has been a difficult area to manage; stigmatised with a poor reputation. The road suffered high rates of crime, vandalism and was targeted by drug dealers. It had gangs of youth’s hanging-out on its street corners; there was anti-social behaviour, drug abuse, under-age drinking, racism, intimidation and prostitution. Its environment appeared run-down and there was an atmosphere of decline and dereliction” (Taken from the document: ‘Granville road is changing’ Endeavour Housing Association) Not a promising location for a horticulture project you might think? But in 2006 the housing association and residence association decided to seek funding to improve a number of front gardens along Granville Road. The funding secured allowed for the improvement of just 12 front gardens from a possible 97, so the names of everybody wishing to take part were put in a hat and twelve names were drawn. The project required that the 12 residents attend a design workshop and work with a garden designer to develop a plan for their own garden. The materials and quantities were agreed and dually delivered at the start of a three day build. The residents were required to do the construction work but could draw on professional advice and support when required. The budget per garden was a little over £250.00.
