![]() Community Gardening Project Locomotion: National Railway Museum, Shildon
Locomotion: the National Railway Museum at Shildon received funding to create a community garden in the grounds of Timothy Hackworth’s cottage. (Timothy Hackworth was an eminent engineer and the first superintendent of the Stockton and Darlington Railway) The garden was developed as a sensory garden but from very early in the design process it was decided to create a garden that was in keeping with its historic surroundings. To this end the project managed to source reclaimed materials for all the major components of the garden. The paving / blocks are wonderful old salvaged slag blocks very generously donated by Sedgefield Borough Council and the sandstone used for the dry stone walling in the raised beds came from a local salvage yard. The project also had the privilege of being able to use one or two items of stoneware salvaged from the world’s first commercial railway line, which ran between Darlington and Stockton and was opened in 1825.
