![]() Community Orchards Project The Gresham Community Orchard
The residents of Gresham indicated that they would really like to create an orchard within their community, the only problem being that the Gresham ward is dense Victorian terraced housing with little enough room for people never mind orchards! The solution was the creation of ‘The Secret Orchard’. Twenty apple trees were given to 'guardians' with the location of the trees being marked on a map of the area. The participants were then invited to attend an urban orcharding workshop at which they discovered how to prune their trees, identify pest and diseases and harvest and store fruits. The community has since been encouraged to host an apple day celebration at which they could share the fruits of their labours, swap fruit and share receipts etc.
