Growing Communities Workshops

Growing Communities workshops have been designed to illustrate the benefits of community horticulture to a wide range of communities, individuals, infrastructure organisations, community champions, local authorities and housing Associations. The workshop explores how best a project might be planned funded and implemented within a community as well as looking at a range of specific community horticulture projects that might be appropriate and sustainable within a community setting.

Originally devised and delivered for the Growing Communities Project a series of workshops sponsored by the North York Moors National Park Sustainable Development Fund the workshops are now being made available to the wider community.

The workshops illustrate a wide range of community horticulture projects and will specifically cover:

How to successfully engage your community and keep them engaged.

The Community Gardeners Tool kit

A look at a range of community horticulture activities and how best to implement them within your community.

Topics covered will included:

  • Community Orcharding
  • Community Composting
  • Shared Allotments
  • Street Gardening
  • Garden Competitions / Open Gardens

Project Planning

The workshop will explore simple budgeting, time scales and the programming of activities.

Project Funding

Writing a successful bid, possible funders, designing a self-sufficient project.

Practical gardening workshops are typically based round a seasonal horticultural activity such as a summer hanging basket workshop or garden taster session. The workshops are tailored to meet an individual community’s needs but in most cases the participants get to take their work home.

Session length: 1-2 hrs

Number of participants: 10-50

Content

Typically run from a community venue, tickets are often booked in advance to manage numbers.

List of Workshops:

Hanging basket workshop
A spring bedding basket assembled under instruction

Autumn hanging basket
As above but autumn bedding

Fruit basket
Straw lined and planted with Strawberries

Vegetable basket
Tumbling tomatoes etc

Herb Basket
A mixture of culinary herbs

Christmas Wreaths
12” natural wreath made under instruction

Willow obelisk
Construct a willow obelisk for your garden or yard

General Information

Workshops have the advantage of being relatively easy to organise and in most situations you will find the community willing to make a contribution to the cost of the workshop.
